Opposition of Court’s Order by Tim Cook “Apple”
Tim Cook’s challenge towards the court is oven-hot news now a days. In December 2015, 14 people were killed in California by two attackers (Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook). After investigation by F.B.I, it was seen that one of these two attackers had iPhone. Federal court of America ordered Apple to unlock the phone but company’s reaction became a highlight. Tim Cook clearly opposed this very order by America’s federal court. The order was given by Sheri Pym (Magistrate Judge of America’s Federal District Court). He orders Apple to bypass the attacker’s phone security function. Syed Rizwan Farook used iPhone 5c and both he and his wife were killed by USA police. These two attacked a co-worker of Mr. Farook at a gathering on Holiday. Judge Pym gave orders to Apple in terms of building a very special kind of software that can help F.B. I to unlock this very phone of attacker. But after this order by court, Tim Cook (Chief executive of Apple) announced refusal in this regard. It was so because according to the laws of company, protection of customer’s privacy is their duty. On the other hand, law enforcement authorities want the company to co-corporate with them in order to solve the criminal case. As a result, a legal kind of showdown has been set up between the company and legal authorities of law enforcement.
In a recent statement by Mr. Tim Cook, he said that the order of court is a kind of unprecedented step by America’s federal government. He also mentioned that he opposes this very order by court. According to him, this order has some very prominent implications and these implications are far beyond the case. The department of justice did not give any sudden response to the public in terms of this opposition by Apple.
As of the F.B.I., they are still not able to retrieve the data on iPhone of Mr. Farook. According to them, no one except Apple could do this task. Security features of the device can only be bypassed by the company itself rather than by anyone else. Experts of F.B.I. have mentioned that there are many risks of losing the phone’s data on permanent basis. They are not doing much attempts because as a result of 10 failed attempts, the data will be lost forever (this feature is in the list of phone’s security features). A search warrant regarding the phone has been secured by USA’s Justice Department had secured a search warrant for the phone. As Apple has declined to provide keys or in simple words, help to the encryption technology of attacker’s phone, authorities are thinking to consult court again.
Mr. Tim Cook stated that this very order by Federal court would amount very significantly in the creation of a back door regarding the bypass of strong encryption standards of the company. According to Tim, it will be very dangerous to create something very dangerous. It is dangerous because later in the year 2014, both Google and Apple announced full disk encryption and because of this encryption they are bound to not unlock their products. So no one is sure about what will happen next.
